Baja has long had a reputation as an earthly paradise. Once you’ve seen its wild and evocative mix of coastal and desert landscapes that statement won’t seem so surprising. Lush greens meet starkly beautiful vistas in an atmosphere that’s uniquely Baja. The best yoga retreats are one part amazing yoga, one part amazing location and one part happy surprise.  Whether you’re interested in learning about the fascinating local ecosystem or chilling on the beach, here are five ideas to get you 'yoga retreat Mexico' excited about Baja.

We get your nature adventure rolling on our Baja yoga retreat with a day out on the water kayaking, swimming and exploring.  The Sea of Cortez is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world. You’ll paddle along with hundreds of species of fish and drift past rocky islands home to exotic birds. The warm turquoise waters are remarkably clear and inviting so dive in and enjoy lunch on a deserted beach.

From there you can explore as you will/want through the natural bounty Baja has to offer.  A few of our humble suggestions are:

Whale Watching

From December through March Baja is a prime destination for seeing gray whales. You’ll be immediately impressed by the scale and majesty of these creatures, but take a minute to put their journey into context and you’ll be absolutely blown away. Traveling 10,000 miles between their arctic feeding grounds and the warm waters of Mexico means gray whales have the longest migratory route of any mammal. Hop on a boat or watch them from your ocean view veranda... these majestic beauties never disappoint.

Sea Turtle Release

Baby sea turtles may be on the other end of the size spectrum from gray whales, but the spectacle of hatchlings crawling towards the ocean for the first time is no less magical. From August through December you could be there to make sure they make it safely. Five species of sea turtle inhabit the Baja peninsula, a vital feeding area. Nearly all sea turtles are classified as endangered, so you won’t just be bearing witness to an ecological miracle — you’ll be making a small contribution to the environmental stewardship of the region.

Snorkeling

If you’re looking to get a closer look at Baja’s aquatic life, prepare for an embarrassment of riches: this is one of the premier snorkeling destinations in the world. To be precise, Baja is home to around 900 species of fish and 39% of the world’s total marine mammals. The waters teem with colorful flora and fauna for the curious visitor to marvel at. Visit and find out why ocean guru Jacques Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez “the world’s aquarium.”

Surfing

The costal town of Todos Santos lists restored colonial buildings among its charms, but for those seeking a more adrenaline-fueled experience, this 'pueblo magico' is also a terrific surfing destination. If you’ve never been on a board before, it’s easy to arrange a lesson and the smooth, sandy beaches make it a forgiving place to learn. For the experienced surfer, more challenging breaks are within your grasp. At the right time of year the waves are world-class.
